November 23 through December 16 audiences can experience the much beloved holiday special, A Charlie Brown Christmas live at Chicago Street Theatre located at 154 W Chicago Street in downtown Valparaiso. Tickets for the production range from $15 to $25 per person and can be purchased through the theatre's Box Office at 219-464-1636 X1 or online at ChicagoStreet.org. The theatre enjoys sharing holiday classics with the community in their November and December slot and A Charlie Brown Christmas gave directors, Lisa Formosa-Parmigiano and Kathleen Erny the opportunity to revisit one of their favorites.
Based on the original CBS holiday special by Charles M. Schulz, Lee Mendelson, and Bill Melendez that debuted on December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas tells the story of Schulz's adored "Blockhead", Charlie Brown who is feeling down despite it being one of the most joyous times of the year. In an effort to cheer him up, Brown's fellow Peanuts characters convince him to direct the neighborhood Christmas play. As Charlie and his friends work to overcome various obstacles and personality differences in getting their production together, they are led into discovering the true meaning of Christmas and the beauty and innocence of the holiday season. The stage adaptation is by Eric Schaeffer by special arrangement with Arthur Whitelaw and Ruby Persson.
To capture the childlike wonder and innocence of the original work, the directors auditioned young talent from throughout Northwest Indiana to make up the cast. Erny says that the play has been a great opportunity for the 6th through 12th graders who were cast to have the experience of portraying Schulz's iconic characters as well as a chance for audiences to be treated to the next generation of talent at CST.
Formosa-Parmigiano says that, " The beauty of A Charlie Brown Christmas is how it spans so many generations since it's been around for over 50 years. These are characters, moments and a story everyone knows and loves so it brings audiences of all walks of life together to experience something treasured." She adds that bringing people together to share something memorable with the community has become an important holiday tradition at Chicago Street.
