Community Hospital’s celebration of Nurses Week culminated with a ceremony to recognize the most outstanding nurse and top patient caregiver, as voted by their co-workers. Karen Schneider, nurse from 5 West, an oncology floor, has received the “2019 Nursing Excellence Award,” and Lori Cloud, a patient care technician from 3 Ortho, is recipient of the “2019 Patient Caregiver Excellence Award.”

Franciscan Health Foundation partners with Purdue Extension and Duneland Health Council to bring healthy cooking to Michigan City


Members of the media are invited to the first of a series of classes on preparing healthy meals being held in a new mobile kitchen facility that was made possible by a grant from the Duneland Health Council.

Weather permitting, Chef Erik Tannehill will present the 45- to 60-minute class at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at the Walker Park Community Garden at 900 Walker Street. Chef Tannehill will be taking produce out of the garden and preparing a meal. Attendees will receive an Aldi gift card and shopping list to purchase the ingredients to prepare the meal at home. The first class of 10 participants has been filled.

From the time she started running as a 6th grader, her coaches noticed she had a gift, and couldn’t wait to coach her up into the high school level. This year, finally a freshman, she ran her first season at the high school level, a journey that ended with something young runners everywhere dream of: a trip to the State finals.

St. Mary's Students Make History Come to Life With Parade


On Wednesday, May 22nd, fourth-graders at St. Mary Catholic Community School impressed all who visited with their Indiana History Parade projects. Set up like a science fair, Indiana History topics were on display via tri-fold boards, shoebox “floats”, and oral presentations. Students from other classes visited the parade during the day while family and friends were invited to the well-attended evening event.

Throughout the school year, Mrs. Arianne Wong teaches Indiana History in her classroom. The Indiana History Parade project is a culmination of everything students have learned. This project is also a chance for the students to teach school community and family members what they have learned.
