When little children have their first dental visit at Advanced Dental Concepts, they pretty much run the show. To an extent. In essence, the idea is to get them as relaxed and comfortable as possible so they can build a strong foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
The staff at Advanced Dental Concepts is celebrating February as Children’s Dental Health Month, setting their youngest patients on a road to dazzling smiles.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children have their first dental checkup by their first birthday. Early dentist visits are one of the best ways to prevent dental problems in the future.
“It’s super important to start young with preventative care,” said Jamie Leonard, a dental hygienist at Advanced Dental Concepts. “A lot of parents won’t bring their kids to the dentist until there is an issue, and that can create problems. We want to build their trust and to start good habits early.”
Early visits to the dentist office acclimate children to the environment and the staff, reducing anxiety and fear and leading to stress-free visits in the future.
“When they come in for their first dental visit, it’s very relaxed,” said Allison Papp, dental hygienist. “We kind of let them run the show in some ways. We do what they will let us do. It’s mainly about them getting to know us, getting to know the office, and getting to know the things that we do. It’s all about building trust.”
Throughout February, Advanced Dental Concepts brings dental education into the classroom, too, by visiting schools throughout the Region.
“Usually at the school, we get big groups together to talk to them about healthy habits,” Leonard said. “We talk about food, we talk about brushing, we talk about what the dentists and the hygienists do here, and we talk about things they could do at home.”
“During the presentation, I usually do a part about how much fun it is to go to the dental office,” Papp said. “We have the kids come up and go over all the things that we do so that they feel comfortable when they come in to see us. We try to make it positive. We demonstrate by bringing in some of items we use at the office, so they can see them and see how harmless they are.”
Advanced Dental Concepts keeps it fun and inspirational by inviting children to be a member of the Cavity Free Club. If a child is cavity free at the end of their appointment, they get to put their name in a drawing and staff pick two winners each month. Children get their picture taken with fun props, and the pictures are posted on the Cavity Free Wall at the office entrance.
Throughout Children’s Dental Health Month, Advanced Dental Concepts invites all children in the Region to come into the office to meet the staff and begin their journey toward lifelong dental health.
Leonard’s message to the children of Northwest Indiana: “Come on in and get to know us. It’s not a scary experience. We have a lot of fun, and we’d love for you to come hang out with us.”
