One of the newest faces at Marram Health Center, Mindy Krsak does it all. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner boasting over 20 years of experience in healthcare. She puts all of her knowledge to use keeping kids happy and healthy as they grow up.
From newborns to 18-year-olds, Krsak spends her days diagnosing, treating, testing, and writing prescriptions for her young patients. Though the work is hard, she absolutely loves it. Krsak excelled at science and math in high school and knew she wanted to put those skills to work, but it was not until college that she discovered her love for nursing.
“I love the nursing aspect of it because I love being able to care for people,” Krsak said. “I get to meet people on their worst day possible and help them get home and back to a regular schedule.”
In her all her years of experience, Krsak has worked a number of different pediatric roles. She started out as a nurse in a pediatric ICU and even served as a transport nurse for Riley Children’s Hospital, a job which saw her travelling all across Indiana in helicopters and ambulances, caring for critically ill children. Despite all of the experience, her career in pediatrics started as something of a coincidence.
“When I was in nursing school, I applied to be a student nurse extern,” she recalled. “I applied for that program and they just placed me in pediatrics. I fell in love with it right away and have been in the field ever since.”
According to Krsak, the best part of her job is the relationship that she gets to build with her patients and their families.
“I really enjoy it when the kids come back and see me—they’ll give me a hug and they’re excited to meet,” she said. “It’s great to be a part of their healthcare family. We’re making sure they’re meeting their milestones and getting the resources they need to grow up and be good citizens of the community.”
One special privilege that pediatric nurse practitioners have is getting to watch their patients grow. Krsak hopes that one day, she might see one of her old patients return to Marram as a parent.
“You get to see them from the time that they’re a baby up to when they’re heading off to college,” she said. “It’s pretty awesome to see them grow into adults and have children of their own!”
