Lake Central Football Tradition Builds Lifetime Bonds

The Lake Central football team hits the road on Wednesday. Their trip will be anything but a leisurely summer vacation. The Indians see their journey to Trine University as a chance to get better.

The team will practice in Angola, Indiana, until Saturday, July 16. Trine has become an annual tradition for Lake Central, and the Goshen Redhawks will be joining the Indians for a scrimmage this year. Sophomore Zach Bundalow is projected to be the Tribe’s starting quarterback. He said he hopes to gain more knowledge during his first Trine trip.

“I hope I learn more about reading defenses and seeing different coverages,” he said. “I am more excited than nervous. I was nervous going into this year, but I overcame that in the beginning of the summer.”

Bundalow credits the upperclassmen for helping him ease his nerves.

“They encourage me and give me the confidence that I can do things,” he said. “It has really meant a lot, because I have always dreamed of playing under the lights.”

Senior running back Anthony Giles serves as another weapon in the Indians’ offensive attack. He said he believes the Trine trip enhances camaraderie.

“I am always excited for this because it is a great experience to bond with teammates,” he said. “You definitely get a great amount of football in that short amount of time, and it gives the younger guys a chance to get to know the older guys.”

The Indians will look to senior free safety Nick Lucas to anchor their defense. Lucas said he is aware of Coach Brett St. Germain’s expectations.

“As upperclassmen, we just have to set good examples,” he said, “We have to let the younger kids know what we want to accomplish as a team, and I truly believe we are all focused on the same goal. We will do anything to obtain it.”

The trip, while intense, is about more than just football. Giles gives a word of advice to both his teammates and the Lake Central faithful.

“Go out to Trine and experience their cafeteria’s chocolate milk at least once,” he said. “Put it on your bucket list.”
