Whiting Oilers Football, Community, Come Together to #DoItForVic

WhitingFootball#DoItForVic

This hashtag means everything to Whiting Football this year. What started as a rallying cry for the Oilers’ football team has now turned into a symbol of hard work, dedication to what you love, and of optimism in the close-knit community of Whiting.

Vic Sahagun, who passed away last year, had a passion for Whiting football. He was a former player who continued on as a volunteer coach after he graduated high school. He volunteered in the off season weight program, was the Head Coach of JV for some time, and eventually worked his way up to the Oilers Defensive Line Coach. Those that knew him said he was motivated by a love of the game, but much more so by the love of the kids who played it.

“Vic was a very special person to the football program,” Oilers Head Coach, Jeff Cain, told IIMM. “For the past ten years he gave himself to building our program up in any way possible. His passion was for player development and seeing the kids mold into the player he wanted to be.”

And Cain says that passion meant something to each and every kid he met.

“Vic was tough but fair with all kids and they responded to his dedication and commitment by mirroring that image,” Cain added.

Now, thanks to the help of the Oilers football team and Assistant Coach, Brett Jennings, Sahagun’s family is turning his passion into progress in the community in the form of a scholarship for Oilers football players who exemplify the same love of wanting to make a difference in the community, and the willingness to work hard to do it.

“Brett Jennings came to us with the idea of the scholarship,” Vic’s sister, Elizabeth Sahagun told IIMM. “We are very grateful and happy to be a part of this idea. This scholarship will go to a deserving student on the football team who is the most hardworking kid out there.”

This way, Elizabeth adds, the impact and difference Vic Sahagun has made in the Whiting community will continue to live on.

“[Vic] had an impact on a lot of athletes here. While he may not be here with us physically, this can continue to make a difference and motivate the students to keep working hard.”

Sahagun put his heart, soul, and time into the community and the Oilers’ football team. This year, there is no bigger goal for the players on the Oilers than to do work.

And do it for Vic.
