Lake Central Blue and White Scrimmage Showcases New Field and New Season

Pads collided on the blue and green turf. Brand-new lights illuminated Wicker Avenue’s newest playing surface. For the Lake Central football team, Friday night was a chance to showcase their skills on the gridiron.

“Today, we made some plays and the defense played well,” Tony Bartolomeo, wide receivers coach, said. “We had some growing pains on offense, but we will be okay. I’m just looking forward to helping kids get better day by day.”

The “D” was anchored by junior stalwart Nick Lucas, who pulled off a pick-six early in the evening. As a free safety, Lucas’ task is to patrol the last line of defense.

“Every single time you get an interception, that is always a great feeling, but any time you can take it back to the house, that’s even better,” Lucas said. “Our [defense] has a great bond going right now, and hopefully we can make a run deep into the year.”

Bartolomeo, the Tribe’s former Athletic Director, has planned a structured approach for this campaign. He remains focused on gradually getting past the initial glow of the Friday night lights.

“We are not where we need to be, but we have time to get there,” Bartolomeo said. “When I can help kids get better, then my wideouts get better, then the running backs get better, then we get the offensive line better, then the defense gets better and we can start putting together a team. It’s the first time we’ve been here to play under the lights, and it looks awesome.”

Lucas, however, is locked in to Friday, August 21.

“I’m really looking forward to Munster,” Lucas said. “It’s always a great rivalry with Munster. Week 1 is two weeks away. I can’t wait any longer.”

The boys in blue are ready to rumble. They aim to remain humble, but most of all, stay hungry.
