The state of Indiana is divided into five regions and the nominees are grouped by region. The selection committee is made up of educators and civic leaders from the five regions.

At the awards luncheon, the students honor the school employee that most influenced their success. Alyssa chose to honor Mr. Michael Gonzalez, Spanish teacher at Crown Point High School, who was a role model and mentor to her.

Assistant Principal Russ Marcinek, was at the ceremony to celebrate this honor for Alyssa and Mr. Gonzalez. Alyssa’s parents, David and Brenda Harvey, also attended the ceremony. Brenda Harvey said “What an honor it was to attend the Academic All-Star Award luncheon in Indianapolis! The ballroom is so historic and beautiful and the lunch was delicious. It was very inspiring to see and hear about the next generation. If these kids are in charge, the world is in good hands.”
