Purdue Northwest’s Flessner Claims GLIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week

PNW-Flessner-Pitcher-of-Week-2018Junior Kyle Flessner (Thomasboro, Ill./Kankakee CC/Rantoul Township) from the Purdue Northwest baseball team was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week when the conference office released the honor Monday morning. Flessner struck out a program record 16 batters to fuel a one-hit shutout for PNW in a 5-0 win over Wayne State (Mich.) Saturday in game one of a doubleheader in Hammond, Ind.

Flessner earned his first victory of the season (1-2) with the impressive outing Saturday. After striking out 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, he cruised through the first six innings of the opener and did not give up a hit until two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. He also issued one walk in the sixth inning.

“Kyle was hitting his spots and had complete control of his fastball from start to finish Saturday,” said PNW baseball coach Dave Griffin. “It was an impressive performance and he is definitely deserving of any recognition he receives.”

Purdue Northwest (10-13 overall/3-9 GLIAC) heads up to University Center, Mich., this weekend for a four-game GLIAC series with Saginaw Valley State (Mich.). The first game is scheduled for nine innings and begins on Friday, April 13, at 3 p.m. CT at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
