CCSJ Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Open Conference Season

CCSJ-Baseball-Drops-Doubleheader-To-Open-Conference-SeasonSnow on Tuesday cleared just in time for a beautiful Wednesday, allowing the Calumet College of St. Joseph baseball team to open up the conference portion of this schedule. What was to be two home games became virtual road games, as playing conditions forced the game to be moved to Joliet Junior College. That just so happened to be right down the road for University of Saint Francis, their opponent for the afternoon. The Saints kept the Wave bats silent in both games, allowing USF to swept Calumet 6-1 and 8-0.

RESULTS
Game One: USF 6, CCSJ 1
Winner: Kevin Mampe
Loser: Daniel Iglesias (FR/Hialeah, Fla.)

Game Two: USF 8, CCSJ 0
Winner: John Riordan
Loser: Hunter Botkin (FR/Temecula, Calif.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
USF (8-13, 2-0 CCAC) opened up game one with two runs in the first inning, thanks to a single down the right field line. The Saints added two more in the top of the fourth before CCSJ (4-16, 0-2 CCAC) finally brought a runner home. The run off a throwing error would be all that the Crimson Wave would muster in the opener, allowing Saint Francis to score once more in both the sixth and seventh innings. USF pitcher Kevin Mampe went the distance, allowing one run on four hits. Wave starter Daniel Iglesias was allowed to pitch a complete game as well, allowing six runs off of ten hits.

Once again the Saints would score two runs in the first inning of game two, both unearned thanks to a fielding error from Alex Verta (FR/Chicago, Ill.). USF brought their total runs to eight with two in the second, one in the third and fifth, and two more again in the eighth, while the Crimson and Gray were shutout for the third time this season. The Wave only managed four hits again, spread amongst four different players en route to the 8-0 loss.

STAT OF THE GAME
Each team had the same number of hits during both games. The Saints would accumulate ten in each battle, while CCSJ ended each game with four.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Nick Relli (JR/Homewood, Ill.) and Gab Rocha (FR/Chicago, Ill.) both came in during game two to provide the Wave will one inning of shutout ball each. Neither would allow a hit, while Rocha would earn a strikeout during his time in the game.

WHO'S ON DECK?
CCAC action will continue on Friday, when Cal College welcomes Olivet Nazarene University to Oil City Stadium for the first time in 2018. First pitch for the single game is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
