PNW-Purdue-Northwest-Tops-Judson-in-5-4-Thriller-to-Advance-to-CCAC-SemisPurdue Northwest Tops Judson in 5-4 Thriller to Advance to CCAC Semis Cynthia Basu-Chavez was the hero and kept the Purdue University Northwest women’s tennis team’s season alive with her win at No. 4 singles in a three-set thriller, as the Pride defeated Judson University, 5-4, in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Quarterfinals.

The No. 4 seed Pride (8-7) defeated the No. 5 seed Eagles (10-14), 5-4, in what was a back-and-forth match at Community Hospital’s Tennis Complex Monday.

The match rested on the shoulders of No. 4 singles, which the winner of the set would give their team the victory. Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Judson’s Abby Jungles went to a three-set thriller, Basu-Chavez won the first set, 6-1, but Jungles fought back and won the second set, 6-4, the third set would go back and forth with Basu-Chavez coming out on top, 10-8.

With the win, PNW advances to the CCAC Semifinals as the Pride travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to take on No. 1 seed Cardinal Stritch on Thursday, April 27.

Judson led the match after taking two matches at doubles competition in two close matches but the Pride answered right back at singles competition. Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Stella Evers (Aurich, Germany) took No. 1 doubles against Judson’s Martha Banda and Lauren Saiki, 8-2.

Later in the match, Foltz had a solid match at No. 1 singles against Judson’s Banda, 6-1, 6-2. Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecudaor) never looked back and shutout her opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Judson did not go away as Inna Iacob won at No. 2 singles in a three-set tiebreaker against PNW’s Evers, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9, which tied the match at 4 all.

Purdue Northwest in Second Place After CCAC Championship First Round The Purdue University Northwest men’s golf team stood 13 strokes off the leader after 18 holes in Monday’s first round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Championships hosted at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

The Pride shot a Day 1 307 to stand in second place, as Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) leads the 14-team field with a 294.

Senior Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and sophomore Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) shot identical 75s lead the Pride, both marks tying for fifth place in the 67-golfer field.

PNW freshman Brian Brzycki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) carded a 78 (tied for 16th) and senior Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) rounded out the Pride team score with a 79, good for a tie for 21st overall.

Josh Jackowski (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central) recorded a Round 1 86 to complete PNW’s competitors.

Holy Cross College’s Joey Medora led the field with a 1-under par 70.

PNW has a shot to catch Stritch, as the Pride’s best team score this season was a 297 at the St. Francis Spring Invite.

The CCAC Championships resume at 9 a.m. CT Tuesday to complete the two-day event.

Purdue Northwest Completes Sweep of CCSJ with 10-1 Win Sunday The Purdue University Northwest baseball team defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic conference rival Calumet St. Joseph to complete the three-game sweep at Oil City Stadium Sunday.

The Pride (23-15, 16-6 CCAC) defeated the Crimson Wave (5-42-1, 0-22 CCAC), 10-1, behind another strong pitching performance by senior right-hander Matt Sandoval.

PNW returns to action Tuesday, April 25 when the Pride host Cleary University for a nonleague doubleheader at Dowling Park starting at 2 p.m.

Sandoval (Highland, Ind./Bishop Noll) dazzled on the mound again for PNW to improve to 8-1 on the season, throwing five scoreless frames, scattering two hits, issuing two walks and striking out seven.

The Pride jumped on the scoreboard early with a run in the first inning as Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) grounded into a fielder’s choice scoring Tyler Crussen (Wheeler, Ind./Wheeler).

PNW tacked on two more in the fourth inning as Austin Kordik (West Chicago, Ill./Community) ripped a single to right, scoring Cody Moskovsky (St. John, Ind./Bishop Noll) from second. Following a single by Tyler Kenjic (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) and a walk by Luke Schmidt (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South), Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) got plunked with the bases loaded scoring Kordik, which gave PNW the 3-0 lead.

The Pride erupted for six more in the fifth inning, started by Larry Crisler's (Gary, Ind./Bishop Noll) single up the middle, then his quickness helped him come around and score as he stole second and third before scoring on an error. Kenjic hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Jake Lindeman. Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) scored off a CCSJ miscue when Schmidt reached on an error. Crussen roped a two RBI single to right, scoring Schmidt and Korik. Crisler reached on a fielder’s choice which scored Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) to give PNW the 8-0 advantage.

The Crimson Wave were able to get one run back in the seventh off reliever PNW Jimmy Skiff (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) as Antonio Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to center which scored Kai Sinclair. Skiff went two innings, giving up one earned run, allowing three hits and striking out two.

PNW would get that run right back in the ninth inning as Crussen continued his big day with an RBI single to right easily scoring Kenjic from third.

Brody Kutch (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) shut the door in the last two frames to seal the victory for the Pride, only scattering a hit, issuing one walk and striking out three.
