He will serve as the Black and Gold’s volunteer assistant coach and his primary duties will involve assisting with in-game strategy and recruiting.

“We are very excited to add Tom to our coaching staff,” said Griffin. “He adds another good presence to our staff with his strong baseball mind and ability to mentor our young men. We are preparing our players to take the next step in their careers, both in baseball and in life and Tom will be a great catalyst in those efforts.”

McDermott has been very active in the Hammond baseball community, accruing over 12 years of coaching experience including recent stints with Hammond Optimist Youth Sports and the Indiana Playmakers. A United States Navy veteran, he earned a bachelor's degree from Purdue Calumet while also graduating from the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Purdue Calumet, who reintroduced baseball this spring after almost a four-decade long hiatus, will open up the future home of Peregrine baseball in 2014-15, the state-of-the art Albert’s Jewelers Diamond at Dowling Park.
