Fine Needles and Fertility

Holistic-HealthResearch suggests that acupuncture may help boost fertility in women who are trying to conceive.

Before the days of hormone therapy and in vitro fertilization, ancient Chinese medicine experts were working to enhance health by administering acupuncture—a fine needle therapy with many potential health benefits that also may help women who are trying to get pregnant.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, acupuncture offers effective solutions to treat conditions that may interfere with fertility, such as thyroid disorders. In fact, the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine notes that Tel Aviv University found that traditional Chinese medicine treatments such as acupuncture, when used in combination with intrauterine insemination, were shown to increase rates of conception significantly.

How It Works
Theoretically, by inserting fine sterilized needles into certain areas of the body known as meridians, acupuncturists can work to regulate functions of the body that are critical to reproductive health, such as development of the uterine lining.

Additionally, acupuncture may help relieve stress that sometimes interferes with the body’s ability to conceive.

However, acupuncture alone is not always the best solution. A holistic practitioner may recommend utilizing acupuncture in combination with herbal medicine supplements. The alternative form of infertility treatment is not always the best solution in cases of endometriosis or tubal adhesions, which should be addressed by a traditional obstetrician/gynecologist.

Post-conception Options
There are many additional benefits of acupuncture after a successful conception, as well. Specifically, the practice may help alleviate insomnia, lower back pain and morning sickness.

According to the National Institutes of Health, acupuncture may be an effective option to treat these conditions and more. But keep in mind, the quality of your acupuncturist is critical. Do your research before you choose a specialist.
