St. Mary Medical Center Celebrates Life during 2015 National Cancer Survivors Day

St-Mary-Medical-Center-2015-Cancer-Survivors-2015-01More than 78 cancer survivors, caregivers and family members gathered at St. Mary Medical Center on Sunday, June 7, joining the 14.5 million cancer survivors in the United States in celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day. The day’s events included a comedy show by comedian Don Tersigni, a chair yoga demonstration, a photo booth, and chair massages. There also was a drawing for door prizes donated by local businesses and refreshments.

“Cancer Survivors Day is a great reminder of the value of life,” said Connie Behling, RN, Oncology nurse manager at St. Mary Medical Center. “These patients have fought a tough battle. Their bravery and determination to beat this disease is admirable and they deserve to celebrate their accomplishments. This event also gives hope to those currently battling cancer with a chance to meet long-term survivors and see that cancer can be defeated.”

As a part of the day’s entertainment, selections from the Lilly Oncology On Canvas exhibition were on display. The traveling exhibit is a body of artwork created by cancer survivors and caregivers, sharing their journey with cancer through paintings, drawings, photography and mixed media. The exhibit was displayed at St. Mary Medical Center as a part of the hospital’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life and serving the needs of the community.

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual Celebration of Life for people who have battled cancer and their caregivers, held on the first Sunday in June. The celebration honors survivors and demonstrates that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful.
