Participants Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research

AlzheimersAssociationThe Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Northwest Indiana residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. The Merrillville Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21, at Hidden Lake Park, located at 6355 Broadway. The Michigan City Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Washington Park, located at Six on the Lake.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for more than a 1,000 participants in Northwest Indiana who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. In addition to the Walk, participants will enjoy a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

Last year, Merrillville resident Steve Pietras lost his wife from Alzheimer’s disease. Today, he volunteers and walks to honor his wife and to raise awareness through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. “My goal is to help at least one person. If people knew the warning signs, maybe they would get an earlier diagnosis,” said Pietras.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
