Porter Regional Hospital’s Center for Women’s Health Celebrates First Anniversary

Center-Womens-Health-1st-AnniversaryPorter Regional Hospital’s Center for Women's Health recently celebrated its first anniversary.

The center, accredited by the American College of Radiology in ultrasound and mammography, is located in the hospital's adjacent Medical Plaza and offers a comfortable and convenient location for women to access outpatient diagnostic and treatment services with advanced technology.

The center includes private suites for digital and 3D mammography, ultrasound and bone density scans; stereotactic and ultrasound biopsy treatment rooms and radiology reading rooms. A special computer resource area is dedicated to patient education.

What we have created here,” explained Esther Lee, M.D., “is a comprehensive program where women can come for screenings, detection, diagnosis and treatment.” Fellowship trained in breast imaging, Dr. Lee says the center is on par with national benchmarks for the detection of breast cancer. “Women can come here and feel confident, because we offer accredited breast care and diagnostics.”

Additionally, the center offers its patients the assistance of its Certified Breast Patient Navigator, Cheryl Wallace, RN, BSN. Wallace recently received the prestigious designation of Certified Breast Patient Navigator (CBPN) in Imaging and Cancer Care from the National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCBC). In her new role as CBPN, Wallace establishes close relationships with people who have a variety of issues, from those who are simply worried about their breast health, to those with benign breast disease, to those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. According to Wallace, with the CBPN as their "go to" person, patients feel secure that their care is well coordinated and that they will be well-prepared for the next steps in their care.

"The most important thing for our patients is to help them gain valuable information about treatment and to access resources that can help them through their journey. It is important to be done in a compassionate, caring, and supportive way to assist patients through cancer treatment. It is my goal every day," said Wallace.
