Memory Support Services at Munster Med-Inn Benefit Residents and Families

Quality memory care services are a wonderful resource for those in need. Families faced with memory loss or dementia in a loved one need to find a care facility they trust and that can also support them throughout their loved one’s illness.

Munster Med-Inn provides just that. With a secured Memory Care unit, a wide range of activities for residents, and resources for families, they go above and beyond to aid those in their care.

“I tell my families often we are here for them as much as we are for the resident,” said Rebekah Tomason, Director of Memory Support Services at Munster Med-Inn. “We’re not just a facility, we’re a home. We do everything we can to make this a home like area.”

Finding memory care that also supports family members can be difficult. Munster Med-Inn not only offers a newsletter for families, but provides access to a support group as well. Meeting each month, the group allows family members to discuss the difficulties they are facing and also partake in a short lesson to help educate them on their family members condition.

“We provide a support group on the last Thursday of every month where we come together and socialize for about half an hour, then we have a lesson about dementia. This gives the family support,” said Thomason. “There may be days where we don’t necessarily get to the lesson because they’re visiting with each other.”

In addition, families have access to activities they can take away from the premises to do with their loved one, giving them additional options and freedom. Residents also enjoy a full activity calendar which is tailored to their needs and includes performances and many other great activities.

“We provide all of the activities here in the unit. We have goals of meeting the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs of the resident. We have entertainers that come in twice a week including musicians, comedians, jugglers, and magicians,” said Thomason.

Thomason herself is a certified Dementia Practitioner, making her very knowledgeable about the residents and their needs. Through her knowledge, she understands the importance of community outreach, and has recently led the unit and employees in the alzheimer’s Association Walk in Lake County. The group had a wonderful time and even painted rocks to place around the walking grounds, providing additional outreach into the community.

“We reached out to the community during that walk by hiding rocks during the walk and giving away gift cards that had been donated,” said Thomason. “We’ve always participated, we just really pushed it this year to see how far we could take the staff and families. We’d never had a family walk before, but we had five walk with us this year.”

While finding memory care for a loved one may be a difficult decision, finding the right place for them to call home and having additional options as a family are very important. Munster Med-Inn recognizes this and is eager to aid families who are in need. With their many resources, activities, and a support group to depend on, they truly take care to a new level.
