Lincolnshire Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Treats All Patients Like Family

When her husband came to Lincolnshire Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for recovery, Marilyn and John Niles were welcomed into the facility as fellow family members.

During a time of fear, uncertainty, and pain, the staff of Lincolnshire guaranteed the Niles’ were comfortable while everyone waited for John’s recovery. John, 91, suffered a light stroke in late 2016 while at home. After spending a month in the hospital, he was released to undergo therapy at Lincolnshire, where he spent the next seven months working with both occupational and physical therapists.

According to staff, John was barely eating, not walking, and was placed on Hospice when he first entered the facility. Marilyn visited him everyday, trying to communicate with him, she said.

“After the stroke, he didn’t know anything for a couple of months, absolutely nothing,” Marilyn said. “I didn’t think he was going to make it, that was how bad he was. He would just stare at you, but oh boy, did he snap out of it!”

Around the end of February, John’s progress skyrocketed to success. He was back to talking, eating, moving, and doing great. His therapy progressed and he was back to his old self again. John was discharged on June 1st, and was able to return home with Marilyn, but not without thanking the staff.

“It was great. Everybody was so nice and helpful,” she said. “I told the staff, ‘You guys are just like family to us.’”

The Niles live less than five miles from the facility, located in Merrillville, which makes John’s ongoing treatment convenient for both them and the staff. He has in-home care and a nurse who comes to the house for more therapy several days a week.

Currently, John is walking around with a walker and doing great, Marilyn claims.

The Niles attribute John’s recovery to the care placed on him from all of the employees of the Lincolnshire facility, not just his personal nurses. Thanks to the clean and beautiful facility and helpful and friendly employees, the Niles have many more years to spend with each other.
