Linking Antidepressants and Autism

Pregnancy and depression can go hand-in-hand—13 percent of women develop this mood disorder pre- and postpartum—according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A chemical imbalance in the brain causes depression symptoms.

Wonder if you or a loved one is dealing with depression while pregnant? Here are some signals:

Emotional pain. Not all depression looks like intense sadness, but it does appear to alter moods dramatically. Some women may seem anxious, while others will become distant. The usual sign you should watch for is for emotional instability.

Relational barriers. When moods seem out of order and life too demanding, relationships often breakdown or feel depleted. Watch for relational hardships across the board. Depressed women often feel the need to isolate themselves.

Physical health. Lack of physical energy often accompanies depression, though other physical symptoms include headaches, pains and lethargy.
