Is Family History Putting You at Risk for Colorectal Cancer?

eblast-201504You’ve heard you should schedule a colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50. But what if you have an increased risk of colorectal cancer because of family history? You’re considered at higher risk if:

You have a first-degree relative (parent or sibling) who had polyps before age 60
You have two second-degree relatives (grandparent, aunt, uncle or half-sibling) who had polyps at any age

If this is true for you, the American Cancer Society recommends you receive your first colonoscopy at age 40. You may also need to be screened more frequently.

Not sure if you’re at higher risk? Talk with your doctor about your risk factors and develop a personal screening schedule. To find a doctor to meet your health needs, call 1-800-541-1861 or visit PorterPhysicianGroup.com.
