IU Northwest Students to Offer Free Health Screenings on Gleason Path Oct. 3, 24, Nov. 14

‘Healthy Path’ program is public service provided by health services students

rot3Area residents who frequent the walking path at the Gleason Golf Course in Gary, immediately west of Indiana University Northwest, will have the opportunity to get free health screenings between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., October 3, 24 and November 14.

A group of students from the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) will be stationed along the course to provide walkers with complementary health screenings, including blood pressure and glucose screenings, visual screenings, body mass index (BMI) and education on heart healthiness.

In addition, workers from the non-profit AIDS awareness group The Aliveness Project will be on hand to provide free HIV testing and information to community members.

Now in its second year, the Healthy Path community-education event is part of CHHS’s Interprofessional Education (IPE) program. IPE brings together students from various CHHS disciplines for team-based learning and outreach exercises that promote better understanding and communication between healthcare practitioners.

“The program gives students valuable experience working with the public and with each other, while also providing a welcome service to the many local community members who exercise at the Gleason course,” said IU Northwest Clinical Assistant Professor Karen Bertram, who is an advisor to the Healthy Path program.
