#1StudentNWI: Lake Central Calls Attention to Veterans and Future Service Members

What's Going On:

Lake Central celebrated Veterans Day in a very patriotic fashion. On Thursday November 9 Lake Central invited veterans from all across the area to attend a special breakfast and assembly. Breakfast was served for an hour and over 200 veterans attended. Students who knew a veteran were dismissed early from class to join their veterans at the breakfast. Once breakfast had concluded students from the remainder of the building were dismissed and sent to the main gym where they eagerly awaited for the veterans to arrive.

“The Veterans were overwhelmed by the students response to them by what they [the veterans] have done,” Thomas Clark said.

The assembly began with the band playing patriotic music until the veterans arrived. All the veterans were marched in and were lead by bagpipe players, while the entire student body and staff gave them standing ovation. Once veterans had settled in, Head Principal Mr. Sean Begley welcomed everyone and thanked the veterans for their service to America.

After Clark, former Governor of Indiana Joe Kernan was invited to the microphone. Kernan told the story of his capture and imprisonment during the Vietnam war. After an engaging story, the band picked up and played the Armed Forces melody, leading the assembly to it's close.

“We are going to make it bigger and better next year, we want to put pictures of the veterans on the megaboard. We want more interaction between the students and the veterans,” Clark said.

Staff Spotlight: Sean Begley

1Student-LC-Nov-2017-03Principal Sean Begley has been at Lake Central since 2002 and has helped the school become a better learning environment. Before coming to LC, Begley taught at Calumet High School as a math teacher for number years, but has found his place as head principal for the last four years.

A typical day for him is anything but ordinary. Begley has found that every day is so different and believes that it his job to help teachers get the supplies and resources they need. He believes that it is his job to move the roadblocks out of the way to help the teachers be at their best potential.

Being head Principal is not his only career. Begley is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indiana National Guard. Begley, who has been deployed twice, has found that being a Principal has prepared him for his role in the military. Though these positions don’t directly cross paths, Begley has relied on both to help him face challenges.

Like his days at Lake Central, Begley found that days in the Middle East where unpredictable and things could change within a few hours or even minutes. Begley has learned through his life that times flies by and that you really don't realise it until you stop and reflect on how many things you have done. Begley can remember when he first joined the armed forces and how he is now called the old man. Both careers he's had major success in and though both are time consuming, he still finds time in his schedule to do other activities.

When he is not working he is exercising. Begley runs with his wife and also takes his son to the gym where the two work out together.

Student Spotlight: Paityn Emro

1Student-LC-Nov-2017-04Senior Paityn Emro is not your everyday student at Lake Central. Emro, who is on her final year of public school, has chosen to go into military service rather than attend college. Emro will be joining the United States Air Force and be a full time active duty Airman. She found that serving her country was the best job for her.

“Especially the way it is now, around the world, I want to help anyway I can,” Emro said.

Though she will be in the military, she will be continuing her education and learning while she is on deployments across the world.

“I am going to see where the four years take me and if I enjoy it I’ll definitely make a career out of it,” Emro said.

Emro wants to become a Neonatal Nurse practitioner, where her job would be to take care of sick infants while in the ICU. Once she is finished with her basic military training she hopes to go into the intelligence field where she wants to help keep Americans safe. If she is to be deployed overseas, Emro hopes to go to Japan or Germany.

Besides joining the Air Force, Emro is graduating early. While Prom and commencement are two major events that seniors look forward to, Emro will be in the process of learning her new job and will not be able to attend either.

“I’m disappointed I won’t be able to attend those events but I will be providing the freedom to allow such events to take place and I am proud of that,” Emro said.
