#1StudentNWI: Hammond Clark Recaps Arts, Athletics, and Scarecrows

Teacher Spotlight

As far as teachers go, Mrs. Price is definitely one to be respected, loved, and looked up to as a role model. She currently teaches art classes such as intro to 2D art, drawing, painting, and fiber arts. However, her flexibility and creative mind go far beyond the classes she teaches. Not only is she a delight to be around and encourages students to try their best in any situation, but she also is the head of clubs like Art Club and Webmasters Club, in which students come together to learn website coding and everything in between when it comes to computers.

Mrs. Price dedicates so much time to the school to better it and inspire open minds to reach outside the box and achieve something truly amazing. Any art that comes through that door and is exceptional gets put in a showcase for all the other students to see, and some art even gets into the yearly art show to be displayed and sold. On top of all that, she also runs Clark’s Facebook page, responding to students and spreading the positivity about us.

She has always been a medium for students to share their ideas and gather resources to create. Mrs. Price is a prime example of overcoming obstacles and in turn creating a positive, free, and open space for students to let their mind flow as creatively as they wish.

Student Spotlight

1Student-HammondClark-October-2017-04Antwon Walker is definitely a force to be reckoned with, on and off the football field. Off, he is a free spirited, creative mind. This is evidently backed up by the fact he is part of Rainbow Staff, a second year participator in our annual Natural Helpers retreat- in which you can only be involved by applying for it and having the teachers collectively reach a decision on whether or not said person should be allowed to participate.

If this doesn’t speak highly of his character, you ought to see him on the field. He is arguably the spirit of the game, raising everyone to their feet every time he gets his hands on the ball, which is more often than not.

In terms of receiving leaders, his numbers reach 43; in yards, 1,072; in touchdowns, 12 (he broke the school's receiving touchdown and yards record!) With the season coming to a close this past Friday, those are undoubtedly some impressive numbers, and with the support of the entire school rooting for him throughout his season, there is no telling what he can do. Whatever he decides, he will have left behind a legacy here at Clark, and those here are truly amazed for what he has done for our school.

What's Going On?

1Student-HammondClark-October-2017-01The Art Club has been busy at work creating scarecrows to display at the Residences at Deer Creek scarecrow contest. Seniors Asia De’leon and Andrea Mackert pieced together the scarecrows in a time frame of 3 to 4 weeks in order to qualify for the annual Scarecrow Contest that takes place in Schererville, Indiana.

Participants enter and the community comes out to vote on which is the best, and winner takes home $500. The Art Club chose to compete in order to win the money to buy Art Club shirts.

The process was very comprehensive and took the efforts of nearly everyone in Art Club, roughly 30-35 people. Everyone pitched in; middle schoolers, seniors, even head of Art Club, Mrs. Price. The middle schoolers assisted in constructing the scarecrow figures including the hands, arms, and chests. Everyone then helped with the decoration of the dresses while other students worked on the constructiong the pumpkin heads.

The theme for the scarecrows was chosen to be Day of the Dead, a mexican holiday used to connect with deceased loved ones. This particular theme follows the relatives; the left being the mother, middle the grandmother, and right being the child.

The contest setup took place over the weekend, October 21-22, and Mrs. Price was there to set the scarecrows up for the community to see, along with the other contestants.

What’s coming up soon?

1Student-HammondClark-October-2017-02With the welcoming of a new school year and a new season comes the wonderful news of a new addition to our school! That’s right, a mural is going to appear at George Rogers Clark very soon! Although it is in its “rough draft” stage, it is pretty far along in the development considering the idea was started on October 2nd.

Mr. Perez, an eighth grade reading teacher, had a wall in his room painted white three years ago with the intent to paint a mural on the blank space. Those plans fell through, and for three years it was left bare and unpainted. Then, the idea emerged again when Andrea Mackert created a mural idea without a place to paint it.

Luckily, senior Melody Wroblewski remembered Mr. Perez’s bare wall, and put the plan in action to finally give him the mural he has been waiting for. When the idea presented itself to him, he was very quick, almost instant, to jump on board, and from there the flower blossomed. This mural will feature the famous quote by Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” with a hand cupping the Earth- which will be filled with positive words- around a solar system. It is difficult to estimate when this mural will be finished, but updates will be around, so stay tuned!
