#1StudentNWI: Springing into the Last Quarter at Chesterton High School

What’s Happening: Spring
With less than nine weeks left of school, many students are looking toward summer vacation. Luckily, activities at the school are not slowing down, so every Chesterton HS student has things to enjoy before break.

From the evening of Wednesday, April 12, to the end of the school day on Friday, April 14, the International Baccalaureate art classes held their annual art show. This year, the theme was “Organized Chaos” and it included over a dozen participants showcasing and selling their pieces. The event was held in the upper level of the fieldhouse, and many students visited multiple times and with various classes.

CHS is also holding the WDSO Radiothon, which is being held in support of and to raise money for local radio. The radiothon will be broadcast on WDSO 88.3 FM from April 17 to April 21. Every day, the broadcast will start at 6 A.M and run until 4 P.M. Over the past few weeks, announcements have gone out for the “Chesterton High School Story Corp”. A recording booth was set up in the library, and students and staff were encouraged to come in and record a story to possibly be broadcast during the radiothon. Listeners are also encouraged to call in during the radiothon and make a pledge or song request.

Chesterton-1Student-April-2017_02 The traditional spring musical this year was moved to the fall, so instead the Chesterton High School Theatre will be putting on a dramatic spring play. The high school is going to be performing Arthur Miller’s The Crucible this weekend. Performance times include Friday, April 21 at 7 P.M, Saturday, April 22 at 7 P.M, and a matinee performance on Sunday, April 23 at 2 P.M. The admission costs are $6 for students and seniors, and $8 for adults. The play this year is directed by the high school’s director of security and safety, Stephen Rohe. The student director is senior Renae Warren, and the stage manager is sophomore Jessica Joros.

Finally, the last big event before graduation is the junior-senior prom on Saturday, May 6. The theme for this year was voted on by juniors and seniors through the website Naviance. Options included the 1920s, Saving Private Ryan (1940s), Alice in Wonderland, Power Rangers, and Spring Fever. The theme ended up being Alice in Wonderland, and tickets are selling for $45 until April 28. It is going to be held at Duneland Falls, with doors opening at 6 P.M and closing at 7 P.M. Before that, the grand march begins at 4:30 at Chesterton Middle School. The prom court nominees have not yet been announced.

Chesterton-1Student-April-2017_03 Student Spotlight: Sophia Moody
Junior student, Sophia Moody always has her hands full. This year, she decided to really jump into school extracurriculars.

“This year, I am involved in National Honor Society, the girls lacrosse team, the Drifters [all female show choir], and Spanish Club,” Moody said. “I just really enjoy keeping myself busy.”

As of now, she is simply a member of all those groups, but next year she hopes to step into a larger role.

“I will be sticking with all my extracurriculars next year. I plan on trying out for Sandpipers [co-ed show choir] next year, but if I stay in Drifters I hope to be section leader. For lacrosse, I hope to improve.”

Moody’s favorite part about being in the Drifters is that she gets to perform in front of so many different people, alongside so many different people.

Chesterton-1Student-April-2017_04 “My favorite thing in show choir is just performing,” Moody said. “I just really love the whole part about being on stage, and just getting to do something I love with people who support me.”

How would Moody describe show choir? Adrenaline fuelled.

“Before my first show with the Drifters, I was so nervous that I was going to mess up. But, as soon as the show started, I felt invincible. Performing on stage with a group like that just gives you a certain rush.”

This is Moody’s first year playing lacrosse. She loves it because it combines her favorite parts of other sports she has been on teams for.

“So, this is the first year I’m in lacrosse. I wanted to join because have always loved playing defense in basketball. And now, I do the same thing in lacrosse. Lacrosse combines my favorite thing in sports that I have played. I used to just love throwing and catching in softball and being on defense in basketball. Now, the thing I should start working on is my running.”

Similarly to show choir, Moody was on edge before her first lacrosse game. But, also like show choir, the nerves quickly turned to enjoyment.

“Right before my first lacrosse game, I was nervous. And I mean, we lost, but it was the most fun I’ve ever had in any sport or any game.”
