A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: Bernie Price

Bernie Price is someone who strongly believes in helping others. Price is a Schererville native and Certified Nurse Midwife who found her passion for helping women at a young age.

“I was 17, I was young and in nursing school. I always liked labor and delivery,” said Price. “I got started at Saint Anthony’s after graduation. It was something I had always liked.”

Price loves her career because it’s more than a job. She helps women, and that’s something she finds a tremendous reward in.

“I like helping women and helping them achieve the births they want. I like listening to them, and helping them with their problems. I want to help them achieve what they want to achieve,” said Price.

With any career in the medical field, comes a tough schedule. As for Price, she wouldn’t change a thing.

“I have a very understanding husband who’s okay that I am on-call all the time. Sure it’s tough not being able to keep plans, and that’s hard. I’ve been doing this since 2001, and it’s far more rewarding than challenging,” said Price.

When she’s not in the hospital, you can find Price at Saint Michael’s Church. She’s been a member for years and actively participates in the church choir.

“I was baptized here, so it’s always been nice to be a part of this community. I’ve been a member of the church choir since 1976. I enjoy the people, I enjoy singing at the church and in mass. It’s great to be a part of the Saint Michael’s community,” said Price.

Price believes it’s important to give back to the community and encourages others to do so.

“I give back because I enjoy it. I enjoy people and helping others. I just like the feeling of helping others out. I’m a Midwife because I help women and that’s something I have always liked doing,” said Price.

Price said she loves Northwest Indiana since it has always been home for her.

“My family is here, and it’s home. I like that my work and my family are all here,” said Price. “I just gravitated back to Schererville. I studied in Texas for a year, but it wasn’t where I wanted to be. I wanted to be back home. I like that I was able to keep in touch with friends from high school and even grade school. It’s nice we can reconnect and be in the same community.”

Her community holds a special place in her heart, which is why she wanted to raise her family here.

“We have so much to do here. I like we’re close to Chicago, I like that the community allows us to do so much. I like, most importantly, that it’s home,” said Price.
