A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: John Gates

John-GatesAlthough a man of few words, the impact of his philanthropy in the community speaks volumes. Meet this week's Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight, John Gates, owner of Culver's in Schererville.

It wasn't until his successful completion of Law School and his work in corporate law at CCH, and a 7-year Editor of The Business Franchise Guide that he felt the need for change. His love of cooking and of serving people helped guide his career change. He was initially hesitant about becoming involving with franchises; however, following his first visit to a Culver's in Minocqua, Wisconsin and his overwhelmingly positive experience, that he became interested.

After completing his research about Culver's, he realized that this is what he was destined to do.

"My favorite job growing up was working at a supper club. I really just enjoyed cooking for people," he said.

After the successful opening of the Valparaiso location, Gates was looking for other opportunities for a new store in the area and found the perfect location in Schererville.

"Anything we do, it's always centered around being actively involved in the community," Gates said.

And active he has been. The restaurant hosts monthly fundraising events benefitting many local non-profit organizations in the community. Over the past year, fundraising events held at the store have benefitted the Pink Ribbon Society, Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and the Schererville Police Department along with numerous area school clubs and teams.

"It's about being involved and caring for the community," is a term Gates not only teaches his staff, but something he really believes in.

Along with managing the restaurant, Gates is also active in the community through his time and talent for a number of organizations.

We thank John Gates for his positive contributions to our community and congratulate him as this week's A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight!
