Crown Point Community Theatre to Perform Miracles in Their Production of “Godspell”

godspellThe stories of John the Baptist, Jesus and Judas will be told musically in Crown Point, when Crown Point Community Theatre performs the perennial favorite musical "Godspell" weekends January 31-February 15, 2014.
Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (composer of other popular works such as "Working" and "Wicked"), "Godspell" is one of the biggest Off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time. Using various theatrical traditions, including pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, the parables of Jesus as told in the Gospel of St. Matthew are brought to life in a series of well-loved songs, including "God Save the People," "All Good Gifts," and the international anthem, "Day by Day."

The cast ensemble, headed by Jerald Jascoviak of Valparaiso as Jesus, also includes Erin Anderson, Kate-Lynn Edwards, Kerry Fitch, Darryn Glass, Jesse Hickle, Sarah Ellen Hickle, Tom Knoerzer, Laura Koch, Trish Neary and Hannah Rettew.

While "Godspell" is well-known, audiences who attend the CPCT production can expect to see something new and likely different than productions they have seen in the past. Directed by Becky Jascoviak with Vocal Direction by Deb Porter, Musical Direction by Jeff Otto and Choreography by Cathy Mertens, this new production is based upon the 2012 Broadway revival. Familiar songs have new orchestrations that hearken the sound of hip hop and Gospel music, and references in the script have been updated to relate more closely to current events and technology. The production has also eschewed the traditional "clown" motif for the costumes, instead modernizing the look to make things feel like a narrative rock concert.

"Godspell" will play in CPCT's black box theatrical space, located at 1125 Merrillville Road (on the southeast corner of the same shopping plaza as Jewel, Bronco's Restaurant, and other businesses). Tickets are $15 per person, or $12 for students, seniors and military personnel with valid ID. Tickets are available online through the CPCT website, www.CPCT.biz, or by calling (219) 805-4255. Reservations are strongly recommended, as seating is limited.
