City of Crown Point Welcomes Fall with 11th Annual Oktoberfest

On Saturday, Crown Point welcomed Fall with music, food, and a whole lot of beer during their 11th Annual Oktoberfest. The fest featured craft brews from the famous Crown Brewing and live performances from local bands such as CAT MAN DOG; there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The City of Crown Point is no stranger to hosting big parties, from their Corn Roast in the summer, to Saturday’s Oktoberfest, the city and mayor’s office love bringing the community out to have fun. Rain and storms threatened, but the event crew persevered and were rewarded when the clouds dried up and the crowd grew.

“Having events like this are important for bringing the community together,” said Diana Bosse, Special Events Administrator for the city. “It’s about getting people out of their homes, it’s going to start getting cold and everybody will be cooped up. This is kind of something to close out the year with a nice, fun event.”

The city partners with Crown Brewing to host the event, while other local businesses such as Carriage Court Pizza and Mattioli’s offered fan favorite foods. A little bad weather was not going to keep Kiersten Thiel, Carriage Court’s General Manager, from setting up shop and serving the people.

“This is good for community involvement and it’s a way for us businesses to give back to the people that support us throughout the year,” Thiel said. “We like to stick it out, be there for them, support each other, and introduce new businesses to the community.”

All kinds of activities filled the day’s schedule, from an applesauce eating contest for the kids and pumpkin pie eating contest for the adults, to a corn hole contest in the evening. For the longtime residents of Crown Point that braved the rain, Juanita and Rory Segally believed the event was about a lot more than drinking beer and eating food.

“We weren’t even going to come out because of the rain,” said Rory Segally. “But she was so dead set on coming that I had to bring her!”

They have lived in the city for more than 30 years, and believe that events like Oktoberfest are part of what keep the community friendly and growing.

“This is just so great and so nice,” said Juanita Segally. “This introduces the things that make Crown Point and the Square what it is. I love Crown Point, there’s been a lot of changes and it’s growing … Such is the nature of Northwest Indiana, you can’t stop change!”
