Indiana Welcome Center to host “Saving a Century of Progress” Presentation, Book Signing

Indiana-Welcome-CenterJoin the authors of “Saving a Century of Progress” and Indiana Landmarks for a book signing and virtual tour of the historic Beverly Shores homes from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Indiana Welcome Center, 7770 Corrine Dr., Hammond.

Relax in the comfort of the welcome center’s auditorium as Todd Zeiger, executive director of Indiana Landmarks’ Northern Regional Office and an expert on the project, offers images and a first-hand account of the historic renovation of the homes that were barged across Lake Michigan from Chicago’s Century of Progress World’s Fair in 1934.

The homes continue to fascinate millions of Americans who visit the tiny enclave each year during their visit to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Enjoy the companion book, “Saving a Century of Progress,” which details in vivid images and lively prose the story of the homes, how they came to be located on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan and the keys to their survival.

“We were privileged to write this book that tells the stories of the homes from the perspective of history as well as contemporary tales from those who have invested years of their lives into restoring these spectacular museum-quality structures,” co-author Theresa Badovich said. “The lessees of these homes were generous with their time, offering photographer John Luke and the two of us writing this book access to the home so we could tell their stories.”

The book signing and presentation kick-off this year’s Century of Progress home tour -- the one day a year when the homes are open to the public. Tickets are $25 and go on sale at 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14. This year’s COP tour date is Oct. 17.

“Chicago’s Century of Progress World’s Fair signaled a seismic change in home-building in America,” co-author Robin Carlascio said. “The Florida Tropical, Armco-Ferro, Rostone, Cypress Log Cabin and House of Tomorrow showcased new materials and designs that have influenced generations of architects and home-builders. We are fortunate Frederick Bartlett had the foresight to bring these stunning structures to Beverly Shores.”

“Saving a Century of Progress retails for $29.95 and is a collaboration between the Dunes National Park Association, Indiana Landmarks and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Your purchase supports the protection and preservation of the national park.
