The Duneland Chamber of Commerce hosted their Annual Golf Outing on Monday at the Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton. Just under 100 golfers gathered to support the Chamber and enjoy a round of golf under partly cloudy, but dry, skies.

“We put the word out through social media, eBlast and on our website and are happy with the turnout this year,” said Beth Luncsford, Marketing Director for the Duneland Chamber. “This is our ninth year hosting the Golf Outing so by now people know it's coming up in the spring and are excited to get signed up and involved.”
The format for this year’s Outing was a four-person team scramble. Each player hit from the tee and the best drive is chosen from the four. All players then brought their ball to the spot of the best drive and the next shot is played from there. That same process was continued for each shot until the ball is holed. Each team kept only one score for each hole and the round. The team with the lowest gross score was declared the winner.
“This is one of our premier Chamber events of the year,” said Maura Durham, Duneland Chamber President. “The Golf Outing helps to generate the funds that will allow us to host other events that don’t necessarily make money. We also owe a great deal of thanks to our volunteers who helped us out here today. It would be really tough for the Chamber to do what we do without their hard work.”
The Chamber added several contests both within and in addition to the round of golf to make things interesting. There was a men’s and women’s Longest Drive competition on two separate holes to see who had the best drive on the day as well as a Straightest Drive and Longest Putt competition.
For those who didn’t like their shot the Chamber sold golfers up to two mulligans. A mulligan in golf is basically a ‘do-over’ which allowed participants to erase a bad shot by getting a second chance.
The Chamber created a ‘game within the game’ by giving each team a yellow Teachers Credit Union golf ball when they signed up. Teams used the TCU ball on each hole rotating from player to player throughout the entire round of golf. Any team that finished the round with the ball were able to subtract one stroke from their total team score.
“Trying to keep that ball was fun for both the golfers and the sponsor who had their logo in so many hands,” said Bob Capehart, volunteer with the Chamber.
There to help out was Maysha Gonzalez from NorthShore HealthCenters. “We’re members of the Duneland Chamber and we sponsored a hole here today,” she said. We’re also promoting Men’s Health Week this week so we thought this was a great event to incorporate that and get involved.”
The winning team walked away with $200 and a trophy, second place received $160 and a trophy, and third place got $100. Gift cards were also awarded for the Longest Drive (men & women), Straightest Drive and Longest Putt.
