Renewing the Region Set to Open May 16 at Indiana Welcome Center

iwc-theatreRenewing the Region, a new exhibit featuring art from recycled and repurposed objects, will open on Friday, May 16, at the Indiana Welcome Center.

The exhibit, which is sponsored by Lake County Solid Waste District, was first featured at the Indiana Welcome Center in 2011 as “Trash to Treasure.” In 2011, the exhibit transitioned to highlight fashionable items made from recycled materials in “Trashion.” The exhibit returns in 2014 with pieces of art and furniture.

According to exhibit organizer, Megan Faulkner, visitors can expect a diverse display of art, with blacksmithing, china painting and antique pieces as well as restored, refurbished and renewed pieces.

“Recycling has been going on forever though people think it’s a new thing. I think people need to realize that instead of pitching something, they can reuse and repurpose the item to make it work for something else,” said Faulkner. Faulkner believes the exhibit will make visitors look at things in a new way while inspiring them to be artistic while conserving.

An opening reception will be held at the Indiana Welcome Center on Thursday, May 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. During the reception, visitors can view the pieces of art while meeting with artists. Additionally, reception attendees will enjoy light refreshments and a performance by the owners of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Merrillville. Sale information for exhibit pieces will also be available at the reception and throughout the exhibit.

Renewing the Region will run through Thursday, July 17. The Indiana Welcome Center is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located at 7770 Corinne Drive, Hammond, Indiana 46323. Beginning May 25, the Indiana Welcome Center will be open until 6:00 p.m. daily.
