We’ve all heard our friends belt out a ballad of “Hot Blooded” in the bar on a Saturday night while the rest of the bar usually joins in on the chorus. And anytime “Cold as Ice” comes on the radio, you know you just can’t change the station. We recognize so many of these songs because they’ve permeated our culture so deeply over the last 40 years. Foreigner has 22 hit songs on Billboard’s Top 40, 9 of which were Top 10 hits. A claim that only a select few bands can also attest to.
Formed by English musicians Mick Jones and Ian McDonald, Foreigner has been touring since 1976 and, judging from the packed crowed at the Venue at the Horseshoe Hammond Casino, they aren’t letting age slow them down.
Jill and Louis Wenzel travelled from Alsip, Illinois to hear the band play.
“This is my first time seeing them,” she said. That’s when Louis chimed in, “I’ve seen them three times. I love them, they’re great. I’ve been listening to them for years.”
The crowd seemed calm before the show started, but as soon as the lights dimmed, and the keyboards started pounding out the intro chords to “Cold as Ice,” the fans stood up as one and started howling out their unbridled love for this long-standing band.
“We saw them this past summer in Chicago,” said Munster resident, Leticia Ramirez. “They put on an amazing show, so we wanted to see them again.”
“I’ve been a big fan,” said Jim Armagast of Schererville. “My first album I bought was in 1976, I was just a kid. Double Vision was an awesome album. Lou Graham is great, but Kelly Hanson is great as well. It’s unfortunate that the lead guitarist isn’t here but I’m sure it will still be a great concert.”
True to form, Foreigner didn’t disappoint. They amped up the crowd with only a few notes of the beginning song, and didn’t let up the heat even when they brought the tempo down to play some of their slower ballads like “I’ve Been Waiting For a Girl Like You” or “I Want to Know What Love Is.” The crowd loved it all. You could hear the crowd singing along to almost every song that came on.
It’s been said that if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life. If the smiles on the faces of the band members as they rocked out are any indication, then that statement must be true. These guys love what they do, and they’re masters of their craft. Watching Kelly Hansen roam between the seats through the crowd and then seeing the look of adoration on the fans faces is further proof of just how much this band excels at what they do.
