An anonymous donor gifted Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana with a $65,000 donation toward building a home in Hammond.
“We were thrilled to receive this very generous gift which will help another family remove themselves from a high-rent situation and into their very own home,” said Executive Director Dawn Michaels. “We send a very genuine thank you to this kind-hearted donor.”
While this donation will fund a significant portion of a three-bedroom, one bathroom, single-family home in Hammond, an additional $30,000 will need to be raised before construction can begin. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana ensures all funding is received before they begin their volunteer-based construction.
“We give a hand up, not a hand out” Michaels stated. “Habitat is unique in that it truly breaks the cycle of poverty for a family. When we sell a home to a partner family, they are no longer paying high rent in substandard living conditions and can use their new disposable income towards education and investing into their local economy.”
Habitat for Humanity builds and sells affordable homes to struggling, working families. Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana has served over 100 families throughout Lake County. Habitat homeowners must dedicate 300 ‘sweat equity’ hours into their home. Upon completion, each home is purchased by the partner family through a zero-interest, 25-year mortgage. Partner families pay property taxes and insurance.
