Horizon Bank Partners with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Northwest Indiana Movement

Horizon Bank announces its efforts to help support the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Northwest Indiana Movement, for the LaPorte County Goes Red engagement on April 7, 2017 at The Uptown Center in Michigan City.

A generous dedication in the amount of $7,500 was presented by Rachel Saxon, President, Horizon Trust & Investment Management and 2017 Chair of LaPorte County Goes Red to Jennifer Young, Socials Director for the American Heart Association, Northwest Indiana, in January.

“We’re thrilled to support this program, which we believe is critical to helping save the lives of women right here in the communities we serve,” says Saxon, Investment Management “The local American Heart Association is working hard to ensure that people understand the unique symptoms women experience with heart issues, and when they should call for help – as well as how they can help prevent these types of ailments.” stated Saxon.

Young, confirms this, noting that a lot of research is being done specific to how women present symptomatically different than men, with signs of a cardiac event. “Women might have jaw pain, or upper back pain, or nausea,” says Young. “And it can be misdiagnosed as a panic attack, when it very well could be cardiovascular disease. So having the knowledge that the symptoms and signs are different for women compared to men, is critical… With the education provided by the American Heart Association, up to 80% of [these deaths in women] can be prevented.” Prevention, she says, comes from lifestyle change, education, and the research that the American Heart Association is doing.

Young says there are seven simple steps to improving outcomes and helping to prevent heart issues, including things like smoking cessation, exercising 30 minutes five days a week, knowing your numbers, reducing blood pressure, being aware of current cholesterol numbers, and more.

The support the AHA gets, Young says, will help them expand their mission. “The majority of funding goes directly to research and education,” she says, noting that less than 8% of donations are allocated for administrative costs.

“I can’t say enough good things about Horizon Bank really championing the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association,” Young says. “Not only in LaPorte County, but using it as an example to help share the mission throughout northwest Indiana. We’re just so thankful for their sponsorship and we look forward to continuing to impact more women.”
