Walmart and Lake Area United Way Team Up to “Fill the Bus” With Back to School Supplies

Lake Area United Way LogoOn Friday, August 1st Walmart and the Lake Area United Way will be collecting school supplies for their “Fill the Bus” back to school drive. Supplies can be purchased and dropped off at the Merrillville store (2936 E. 79th Ave.) throughout the day. All supplies will be donated to the Merrillville Community School Corporation.

The supplies being collected include blue and black pens, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, two pocket folders, and wide rule notebooks. Walmart will have pre-packaged supply kits that customers can purchase at varying price points. “We are excited to partner with Lake Area United Way to give back to our local community,” said Allison Higgins, store manager of the Merrillville Walmart store.

Lake Area United Way President and CEO Lou Martinez added, “Students face many impediments in gaining their education. This project will address one of these issues by providing needed school supplies. We’re pleased to be working with Walmart to insure that students are prepared to head back to school and continue learning.”

“Merrillville Schools is delighted to be partnering with the Lake Area United Way and Walmart to have students receive their school supplies through the “Fill the Bus” program,” said Merrillville Schools Superintendent Mark Sperling. “We are appreciative to the community for its support of our excellent students who will be the grateful recipients of these supplies to start them off on the road to the outstanding school year ahead!”
