Olund Awarded “Sagamore of the Wabash”

Northwest Indiana Community Action (NWICA)’s President/CEO Gary Olund, was awarded the “Sagamore of the Wabash” by Indiana State Senators Mike Bohacek and Rick Niemeyer. The award, was presented at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Dinner. The “Sagamore of the Wabash” is Indiana’s highest honorary award in which Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has the discretion to bestow on an individual who rendered distinguish service to the state. Criteria states that in order to be eligible individuals, “must have distinguished themselves by humanity in living, loyalty in friendship, wisdom, and inspiration in leadership. In addition, individuals must have contributed to their community in an extraordinary manner.”

Mr. Olund has dedicated himself to helping others for four decades. Senator Niemeyer remarked that he remembered meeting Gary fifteen years ago during a meeting regarding the future of Community Action in northwest Indiana. “If Gary said he was going to do something, then he did it,” said Senator Niemeyer, referring to Mr. Olund’s integrity.

“One of the most rewarding things about public service is being able to recognize the extraordinary efforts by members of the community,” said Senator Mike Bohacek. “Northwest Indiana is a better place because of his dedication and service.”

Mr. Olund has devoted his entire 41-year career in nonprofit management, exclusively in Indiana. Prior to joining NWICA, The Family & Children’s Center, Inc. in South Bend/Mishawaka enjoyed his leadership as Executive Vice President. Born and raised in South Bend, Olund has served communities and vulnerable populations in various roles at the United Way of St. Joseph County and at PACT, Inc. in Michigan City and Valparaiso.

The evening celebrated 89 volunteers who assisted with the 2016 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program along with many Senior Nutrition, Preventative Health, Board and Advisory volunteers; all who are vital to the success of the organization. “I am honored and humbled by this award which is a tribute to, and shared with, those here tonight and to those who I’ve had the privilege to work with and beside throughout my career,” said Mr. Olund. “We’ve accomplished a lot but, there is still much more to be done,” said Mr. Olund.
