Cause-Driven Heroes: Volunteer Recognition Event at the Crossroads YMCA

Cause-Driven-Heroes-Volunteer-Recognition-Event-at-the-Crossroads-YMCA-2017On Wednesday, March 22, 2017 Crossroads YMCA hosted their First Annual Volunteer Recognition Event with the theme “Cause-Driven Heroes”. The Cause-Driven Heroes are the hundreds of volunteers who have served and continue to volunteer at the Y in a number of roles. From coaching sports to assisting with events; from serving on the corporate board to community beautification projects—our cause-driven heroes make the YMCA’s work possible.

Nearly 200 volunteers and their guests enjoyed an evening of recognition, appetizers and fellowship with others dedicated to the mission of this community-based non-profit organization at Lighthouse Restaurant. Last year in 2016, Crossroads YMCA volunteers devoted over 10,000 hours to volunteering at the YMCA which strives to strengthen community. Across the United States, more than 500,000 business leaders, community advocates, parents, teens and individuals who want to give back and support their neighbors volunteer at the Y. With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, Y volunteers give men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life the resources and support they need to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.

Laurie A. Halaska, CEO of Crossroads YMCA, said, “Our Crossroads Y volunteers see firsthand how the Y positively impacts people from all walks of life in their community and that’s why so many of our volunteers choose to support the Y’s mission by giving their time, talent and treasures. We truly value and appreciate every single volunteer. Without them, our Crossroads Y would not be able to partner and help nearly as many people as we currently do. These relationships are vital for people we connect with in achieving their goals around the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.”

Numerous volunteers were awarded special recognition for their work with the Y. Each Crossroads YMCA branch (Griffith, Hammond, Southlake, and Whiting) awarded Program Volunteer Award, Leadership Award, and Ray of Light award to one individual from each location. For the Crossroads Association, four overall awards were given: Rising Star, Community Impact, Volunteer of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement award. Francisco Salazar was awarded the “Ray of Light” award at the event. Francisco was recognized for having an infectious, positive attitude. He helps out with Y events, youth sports, soliciting for donations for special events and advocating for the Y—all in addition to his regular job where he works at the Y’s early learning center. Francisco was honored to receive this award and said, “The YMCA is the best place in the world. Everyone at the Y is so nice and supportive and it is an honor to be a part of the YMCA family.”
