crossroads-chamberAs a nonprofit organization committed to economic development and Region initiatives, the Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Indiana State Representative Shelli VanDenburg to provide its membership with bi weekly legislative updates.

On Friday, January 31st the Chamber hosted a conference call with Representative VanDenburg who gave an overview of the bills the House has discussed thus far in its 2014 session. VanDenburg highlighted those pieces of legislation that were related to business and the economy of Northwest Indiana.

House Bill 1001, tax exemption for new personal property tax, was a main topic during the question and answer portion of the call. This bill would grant county income tax councils the opportunity to adopt an ordinance to exempt any new business personal property that is located within the county from property taxation. Representative VanDenburg explained how school districts in Lake County are heavily reliant on this tax because of the large amount of funds generated from the steel mills in the area; however, this legislation may be beneficial for smaller counties.
