Advanced Animal Medical Hosts Open House & Adopt-a-thon for Dyer Community to Find New Forever Friends

When you adopt a pet, you’re giving it a “forever home,” but if you do it right, you’ll also become its forever friend. Advanced Animal Medical’s understanding of this relationship dynamic is obvious as soon as you walk through the inner doors, where a cat icon points to the left and a dog icon points to the right, designating the separate waiting and exam rooms for maximum pet comfort.

This Sunday, Advanced Animal Medical hosted its Aloha! Open House & Adoption Event, opening the facility to the community to offer a full view of the offerings and the thinking behind the layout. The fun-for-the-whole-family event invited the community to bring their human and fur children alike to enjoy the new facility, providing games and treats for both kinds of kids. Human-only activities like face painting and limbo were available as well.

The heart of the show was the Adopt-a-thon, as Advanced Animal Medical invited rescues from the Region to show off their favorite fosters. Adoptable dogs from the Steger location greeted the community out front, and more dogs were available for petting and adoption inside.

Advanced Animal Medical opened its doors at the end of February this year, so the practice is relatively new to the area. And while it is really extension of the office located in Steger, it has already made its mark in Dyer by being a one-stop shop for everyone to fit their needs.

“We are a regular small animal pet hospital: wellness visits, vaccines, surgeries, dentals, lab work, x-rays,” Karen M. Askounis, owner of Advanced Animal Medical said on the tour, showing the in-house lab where test results can be returned in about fifteen minutes. “For all the basic stuff, we should be able to take care of you.”

“We offer a pretty personal option, we spend time with our clients and their pets,” Askounis explained, “and we’re very cat-friendly.”

Stacy Mosca from Second Chance 4 Pets Network, based out of Whiting, found the event on Facebook. Mosca brought three cats, ages three to five, although they rescue cats and dogs – and kittens and puppies – of all ages. Lily, a gorgeous and extremely affectionate tortoise-shell, is ready to adopt when you’re ready to love her forever.

“[This event] is a great way to enjoy their facility, learn about Advanced Animal Medical, and show off some of their great cats,” Mosca explained.

Karen Bramer from Animal Rescue Squad, based out of Dyer, had an exam room full of eight-week-old kittens. She explained the rescue and adoption processes, noting that a lot of their rescues are found on Facebook.

“If you’re just giving the kitten away, you don’t know what kind of person you’re going to get,” Bramer said, which is why their adoption process includes an interview, an application, and a contract.

And although the hope is that everything works out, Bramer explained that Advanced Animal Medical “has a policy that they’re always welcome back with us.”

Lauren Lamb of Lowell, who works at the Color Room Salon and Day Spa, received the flyer and intended to swing by to adopt a playmate for her tuxedo cat, Mushy. Instead, she would leave with two kittens, sisters Thelma and Louise.

“I couldn’t separate them,” Lamb said, explaining the decision to take both.

The event, while fun for people and pets of all ages, highlights the best of Advanced Animal Medical: a family-friendly, pets-are-family-too focused facility designed around the comfort and complete care of your pets.
