Crown Point High School’s National Honor Society, Griffith High School and the Crown Point Fire Rescue all held fundraising events benefiting the Northwest Indiana Cancer Kid Foundation during the month of March.
Griffith High School students put on a community dance advertised as “Dancin’ with the Panthers.” The day of the event, GHS had a carnival in the afternoon for the elementary age children where they could enjoy a bounce house, raffle baskets, carnival style games, bake sale, concessions and a photo booth.
“We did not allow students to sit or rest the whole evening in honor of cancer patients and families,” said Sara Novak, family consumer science teacher at GHS. “Patients and families battling childhood cancer do not get to take a break and neither did we.”
The night ended with a fun blackout and glow stick dance. This event brought in over $4,500 to the NICK Foundation.
Crown Point Fire Rescue hosted a dodgeball tournament at the Sparta Dome in Crown Point. There were 27 dodgeball teams featuring NWI firefighters, police officers, EMT's, and elected officials who battled it out to raise funds for the NICK foundation.
“Our charity dodgeball tournament exceeded all our department’s expectations,” said Mark Reed, Crown Point firefighter. “We think of the NICK Foundation as our heroes because of what they do for our children and families in NWI in their time of need.”
CPHS’s National Honor Society held a spring luau carnival for local elementary students. The fun fair was free of charge and donations were collected by the National Honor Society students for the NICK Foundation.
“We are so grateful when the community comes together for us so that we can continue our mission,” said Executive Director for the NICK Foundation, Nicole Yarrow. “It makes my heart happy knowing that so many people care about what we do and while helping us, they are actually helping out local families.”
