Adoption Fees Waived, Hours Extended at Humane Society Event

Humane-Society-Calumet-AreaHumane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) will extend its hours for an entire weekend with adoption fees waived Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10 as part of the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

Sponsored by General Contracting, the adoption special is open to the public and the event takes place with extended hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the shelter located at 421 45th St., Munster.

All adoptions require an approved application and all standard adoption procedures apply. The animal does not have to go home at time of application but an application must be submitted the day of the event. Puppies and some kittens are excluded. Additional fees, including a $25 rabies vaccination fee, may apply.

During the event, HSCA volunteer and retired Lake Central High School math teacher Randall Starewicz will sign copies of his book, Shelter Us: The Tails of Max and Miles. The book features two shelter dogs who never give up on one another as the main characters. All proceeds from the sale of the books are donated to HSCA.

Upcoming adoption events take place on August 16 with adoption fees waived for teachers and coaches, August 23 with adoption fees waived for community volunteers, and August 29-31 with adoption fees waived for the public. A list of adoption events and specials can be found on www.hscalumet.org/aspca.asp.

The 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. As a contestant in the challenge, HSCA is competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000.

For the challenge, HSCA chose the theme of “Rescue Me.” Throughout the summer at the shelter, HSCA will offer Save Me Saturdays with reduced adoption fees for a special group—including police officers, firefighters, EMTS, doctors, nurses and more—during each event.

Additional information on HSCA’s participation in the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge can be found on www.hscalumet.org/aspca.asp.
