According to VEX Robotics, "The world faces an unprecedented need for new innovators, thinkers, and problem-solving leaders. At current rates, there are simply not enough students choosing STEM-related paths to meet the global demand."

In response to this need, the fifth and sixth-grade science teachers at Liberty Intermediate School are involved in STEM-related paths, and are in their second year of robotics club competition with 30 students participating among five teams.

The Liberty Intermediate club teams have been designing their robots for competition since September. The competitions consist of two teams collaborating to earn the most points moving rings from posts across a 4’ x 8’ field. These teams of students are tasked with maneuvering their bots in a game-based engineering challenge. There is a separate skills challenge that students participate in individually.

During this season, Team D qualified for the state competition while participating in the Wanatah meet in December earning the “Teamwork Champion Award" while Team B qualified in February at the Michigan City meet earning "Teamwork Champion Award "as well.

Both teams will compete at the "Indiana VEX IQ ES State Championship" on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
