Six Lake County Students to Receive the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship!

Legacy Foundation will award the scholarship to six individuals in Lake County: Giselle Flores, Khavand Peddi, Michael Quintero, Laura Reid, Langston Stalling, and Emily Zanolla. The scholarship covers four years of undergraduate tuition, plus a yearly book stipend, for any public or private Indiana college or university.

This year, 143 students will receive the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship across the state of Indiana.

Legacy Foundation will award the scholarship to six individuals in Lake County: Giselle Flores, Khavand Peddi, Michael Quintero, Laura Reid, Langston Stalling, and Emily Zanolla.

The scholarship covers four years of undergraduate tuition, plus a yearly book stipend, for any public or private Indiana college or university.

Giselle attends Morton Senior High School where she is co-captain of the cross country and track and field teams. As a student writer for Ideas in Motion, she submits monthly articles about school news. In the future, Giselle said she intends to become a doctor and provide health care to underprivileged youth in Northwest Indiana.

Munster High School student, Khavand Peddi, is a member of National Honor Society, DECA, and track and field. Khavand plans to study information systems at Indiana University with a goal of increasing high school students’ experience and exposure to technology.

Michael is captain of the basketball and cross country teams at Bishop Noll High School. He is a Eucharist Minister at St. John the Baptist and volunteers throughout his community, including at Phyre Ministry and Pierogi Fest. Michael plans to attend Purdue University and study mechanical engineering.

Griffith High School senior, Laura Reid, is Class Treasurer and president of the Best Buddies Club. She is a member of National Honor Society and the Griffith Theatre Company. Recently Laura was elected State Thespian Officer and earned her Honor Bar as a thespian by giving 600+ hours toward the theatre community.

Langston has his sights on becoming an anesthesiologist and shadows the profession at a local hospital. As a senior at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy, Langston is Student Council President. He is a youth usher at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church and a Men of Trinity mentorship member.

Emily is a senior at Hobart High School. She is captain of the varsity softball team and varsity volleyball team. Emily is a member of Brickie Leaders, Brickie Ambassadors, National Honor Society, Key Club, and Student Council. She plans to study biochemistry.

Altogether, Legacy Foundation received over 200 applications from 25 area high schools. Students must reside and attend high school in Lake County, Indiana, and have a grade point average of 3.25 or higher to be eligible. Legacy Foundation’s scholarship committee interviews a nominee from each high school and submits six finalists to the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for final selection of the recipients as is required by the Lilly Endowment Inc. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree-granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
