Merrillville Intermediate Participates in 2017 Anti-Bully Week

Merrillville-Intermediate-Participates-in-2017-Anti-Bully-WeekMerrillville Intermediate School celebrated American Education Week by inviting school and community members to visit. Town Council President, Richard Hardaway, Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch, Commander Robert Wiley, and Patrolman and Merrillville School Resource Officer Kevin Furman participated in Pirate Power Advisory Time where students greet each other in a circle and build community and focus on character education lessons.

Thursday, guests were invited to read a book to the students and answer questions about their jobs. Commander Wiley brought a special treat, the multi-use tactical vehicle, MRAP. Three classes took rides in the vehicle around the school, while others were able to talk with officers & ask questions. Students were excited as they also got to witness a "flash bang" exercise!

Merrillville Community School Corporation's Interim Superintendent Mike Berta, Assistant Superintendent, Hilda Damianick, Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction, Marnita Taylor, Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction, Mandy Davis, and School Board member, Tom Bainbridge also participated in the morning activities.

This week's lessons focused on the Anti-Bullying theme of kindness. Monday kicked off the week as the staff dressed up as Super Heroes demonstrating "Everyone is Powerful" ending Friday with Windy City Lives' winner Justin B. Ray. Justin paid a visit to MIS while he engaged with students by singing , He spread awareness about how to "Be a Bestie not a Bully". Justin worked hard and received his silver ticket earlier this year which guarantees him an audition for a finalist position!
