Fish On! St. Mary’s Environmental Club Enjoys a Great Morning of Fishing

St-Marys-Fish-On-2017_01 The Environmental Club from St. Mary’s School in Crown Point recently enjoyed an early morning of fall fishing. Students, families, and staff members journeyed to southern Lake County to enjoy some time at one of their principal, Tom Ruiz’s, “secret” fishing spots. The pond is connected to the Kankakee River, providing it with a diverse population of fish, and most students were lucky enough to reel in several fish regardless of previous experience. While many species were caught including bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and dogfish, students were enthralled by the large northern pike caught by a few of the dads in the group.

St-Marys-Fish-On-2017_02 "We feel that it is important that our students gain an appreciation of nature and fishing is a great way to learn about conservation and fall in love with the outdoors," said Mr. Steve Davis, one of the club sponsors. When asked about the experiences, St. Mary’s students Joey Broadaway and Logan Hamnik both exclaimed “AWESOME!” Logan added that “there were some good fighting fish in that pond.”
