Duneland School Corporation Update, May 26, 2017

Hoops for Heart at Liberty Intermediate School
Liberty Intermediate School (LIS) concluded another successful year with their annual Hoops for Heart event. The LIS event raised $5,110 this school year for the American Heart Association, pushing them over $100,000 mark over the past thirteen years. Sixth grader Matticyn Gropper was the top collector for the school with a total of $705 for the cause. Masun Connaway (5) earned $350, followed by Caleb Benchoff (5) with $305, Sal Garcia-Rogers (6) with $300, and Ciara Bonner (5) with $290. LIS also had a basketball knockout tournament during the event. Winners were taken from each of the sixteen classes. Fifth grade winners were Kyle Pazdur, first place and Chaz White, second; and sixth grade were Gavin Rivera, first and Elysiah Navarro, second. Gavin Rivera was the overall knockout winner from both grades. Heading the fundraising Hoops for Heart event for LIS is Physical Education Teacher Nick Bamber.

The Bailly Elementary School Student Council raised $800 selling Smencils (scented pencils) at the Bailly Bookstore throughout the school year. The Council has chosen to donate the money to the Westchester Neighbors Food Pantry. Pictured making the donation are third and fourth grade council members. Chesterton High School Administrators congratulated the following students on earning a Work Ethic Certification for this school year. In the fall of this school year, these students voluntarily attended a presentation at CHS offered by the Center of Workforce Innovations on how to earn a Work Ethic Certification for this school year. On May 1, these students completed and turned in the necessary paperwork to be considered for this award. On May 24, these students were presented with a Work Ethic Certification certificate. Student can earn this award for exemplary skills in attendance, discipline, community service, organization, punctuality, teamwork and respectfulness. Duneland School Corporation announced the retirements of several teachers and support staff at the end of this 2016-17 school year. The retirees were honored at a Duneland School Corporation hosted reception at the Duneland Administration Center on Wednesday. Those Chesterton High School teachers and support staff present at the reception were, front, left to right, teachers Rebecca Gierke, business/International Baccalaureate coordinator; Jennifer Thoms, guidance counselor; World Language teachers Kayla Vodnoy, Spanish and French; Michele Bartels, German; and support staff Judy Thorne, media secretary and Shirley Wallace, swimming instructional aide. Absent from photo were teachers Bill Bailey, science; John Jones, industrial tech and Donna Wilk, business; and support staff Karen Leonard, attendance secretary.

Duneland-Schools-Update-05-26-17_05 CMS Young Citizen Award
The Duneland Exchange Club recently presented Chesterton Middle School eighth grade student (center front) John Powell with the Young Citizenship Award. Also pictured, left to right, Lorelei Weimer, Duneland Exchange Club, his parents Sharon and Mike Powell and Principal Mike Megyesi. This award is given to an eighth grade student who is an all around good citizen. The club presents this award to one fourth grade student at each of the five Duneland elementary schools, at the sixth grade level at the each of the intermediate schools and at the eighth grade level at Chesterton Middle School.
