6th Grade Teacher Runs Marathon to Fight Back Against Cancer

Merrillville-Teacher-Runs-Marathon-to-Fight-Back-Against-Cancer-2017Merrillville Intermediate School joined the fight against cancer with their 2nd Relay Recess event on Friday, May 19th. It was our goal to bring awareness to the fight against cancer, fundraise for the American Cancer Society, and engage our students in a community service activity. The event brought in donations totaling $3,455.04 for the American Cancer Society.

One of our 6th grade teachers, Mr. Dan Schiefer motivated students by challenging himself to run a full marathon during out event. He successfully ran 26.2 miles with time to spare! It was inspiration to see Mr. Schiefer run his last half a mile through the school building. Students came out of their classrooms with signs and a lot of high fives to cheer him to the finish line. The staff and students of MIS are thankful for his time, dedication, and passion he brought to our event. “It was an honor running today to show my heart for my relatives who have been claimed by cancer as well as those who have survived” said Dan Schiefer. Schiefer also stated “charitable giving is something that our students should be exposed to and take part in in order to grow and develop into kind, caring, and compassionate individuals”.
