CMS places at State Science Olympiad
The Chesterton Middle School Science Olympiad team placed third out of 37 teams in the state competition hosted on Saturday, March 18 at Indiana University Bloomington. Pictured are team members receiving their award at the event. Team members from CMS are Hattie Hoham, Ben Rutkowski, Andrew Engel, Quentin Funderburg, Peyton Day, Sam Keane, Frances Clancy, Zoe Swanson, Allison Soblotne, Aidan Healy, Jackson Fleming and Mark Jewison. Freshman team members from Chesterton High School are Justine Keiser, Sawyer Castro, Drew Engels and Ben Hoham. Their coach is Theresa Keilman.

Duneland-Schools-Update-03-24-17_02 Chesterton High School BPA Club students place at State Competition
The Chesterton High School Business Professionals of America (BPA) Club participated in the BPA State Leadership Conference on March 12-14 in Indianapolis. The Financial Analyst Team of Nia Weems (12), Alexys Hanas (12) and Drew Vesling (12) placed second and qualified to participate in the National Leadership Conference on May 10-14 in Orlando, Florida. Also qualifying was Haydn Malackowski (10) who finished third in Fundamental Accounting.

Other CHS BPA members participating in the conference were Paul Petro, Andrea Hanas, Ana Mirorski, Cara Kroeger, Rahul Patel, Alex Kapote and Tanay Murarka.

Duneland-Schools-Update-03-24-17_03 Japanese Exchange Students Visit
Chesterton High School Japanese students seated front, left to right, Julia Lecy, Logan Summers, Peter Girzadas, Sydney Ghoreishi, Grant Gilbertson, Eve Senderhauf, Sailor Franklin and Adrianna Bressner hosted several students of Zama Sogo High School from Zama, Japan over the last ten days. Back row, Japanese guest students Hanoka Yashizawa, Haruna Toyama, Tatsuyuki Yamagata, Yurie Ozawa, Keita Egawa, Ayu Matsua, Kazuki Matsubara, and Yuka Shirai. On Monday evening the students had a farewell party in the CHS Foreign Language World Center where each family enjoyed pizza and talked about their 10-day adventure.

The Duneland Exchange Club recently presented Bailly Elementary fourth grade student Luke Sparks, center front, with the Young Citizenship Award. Also pictured, left to right, is Principal Kevin Zeck, his teacher Rich Myers, and his parents Cathy and John Sparks, and Duneland Exchange Club representatives and presenters Lorelei Weimer and Dr. Dan Keilman. This award is given to a fourth grade student who is an all around good citizen. The club presents this award to one student at each of the five Duneland elementary schools, at the sixth grade level at the each of the intermediate schools and at the eighth grade level at Chesterton Middle School.

The Chesterton Middle School seventh grade Math Department celebrated their ninth annual Pi Day this year by researching the history of Pi, participating in a variety of 'irrational' activities, and the crowning of the Queen, King, Princess and Prince of Pi Day from each math class. The previous record of 250 digits was broken by both Noah Fletcher with 305 and Kaitlyn Kogl with 318. Pi Day would not be complete without the eating of real "pie" as a culminating activity. The CMS seventh grade math teachers sponsor this event each year.

Duneland-Schools-Update-03-24-17_06 Fantastic End to Chesterton High School Show Choir Season
The Chesterton High School Show Choirs ended their regular season at Herscher High School in Herscher, IL this past Saturday. The Drifters captured third runner up, and the Sandpipers along with the show choir band, 'The Business,' earned grand champion honors and swept the caption awards, receiving Best Vocals and Best Choreography.

"It was a fantastic end to their regular show choir season," said Show Choir Director Kristin Morris.

The Drifters and Sandpipers will perform their final competitive shows for the community on May 18 at the Choral Spring Revue .

For first time in their 44 year history, the Sandpipers have qualified for a spot at FAME Nationals. The road to Nationals in April will begin with a kickoff fundraiser, 'Movies for Music,' to raise funds for the group to attend this prestigious event. 'Movies for Music' will take place in the CHS Auditorium on Thursday, March 23. The movie, Moana, will be shown at 5:00 p.m. and Ferris Bueller's Day Off will begin at 7:00 p.m. The suggested donation is $5.00 per person for a single feature and $7.00 per person for the double feature. Popcorn and water will be sold for an additional cost.

Left to right, Bailly Principal Kevin Zeck joined winner fourth grader Nathan Cox and his friend Chase Beckett-4th for a reward feast. During National Breakfast Week (NBW) the first full week in March, each time a student purchased a school breakfast at a school participating in the contest, they were entered in a drawing. Winners received a reward feast at lunchtime of their favorite breakfast foods offered during NBW and were able to pick four friends as guests. Other participating Duneland Schools were Brummitt Elem, winner Jeffery Vereb-Kdg., and Jackson Elem., winner Mario Perez-2nd grade.
