Brummitt Elementary School was selected as one of 50-$1000 grant winners in the 2016 Bowling To Schools Grant Program through the Kids Bowl Free Summer Program hosted at City Lanes in Michigan City this past summer. Brummitt Elementary was one of 18,000 schools nominated for assisting to help provide children and their families to receive information on The Kids Bowl Free Summer Bowling program. This program is designed by bowling centers to give back to the community and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time during the summer months. Chesterton High School Homecoming Block Party on September 21
The Duneland School community is invited to participate in the second annual Homecoming Block Party sponsored by the Chesterton High School Student Government on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the CHS Music/Soccer Parking Lot. Visitors should enter the CHS Parking Lot entrance on 11th Street as the CR 1050 Entrance will be closed to traffic.
Admission is $1 per person and all admissions earn one ticket. Additional tickets may be purchased for events. (Events range from $1-$5.)
Events include painting the Community Playhouse, a silent auction, a cake walk, a bounce house, face painting, teacher dunk tank, henna tattoos, chair massages and more.
T-shirts for tie-dying, available in sizes Kids M - Adult XXL and socks will be sold for $10 each. Pre-dyed shirts and socks will also be available.
Food will be available for purchase from Val’s Pizza and Kona Ice, among others.
Five Chesterton High School seniors are among the nation’s 16,000 Semifinalists announced in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) competition. These students have completed the first step in the competition for some 7,500 Merit Scholarships, worth more than $33 million, to be offered next spring. This year, CHS was one of the top ten public schools with the highest number of National Merit Semifinalists.
Based on selection index scores on the 2015 PSAT/NMSQT, the CHS students cited in the 62nd annual competition are Sydney Ghoreishi, David Kosakowski, Lennon Metz, Amy Socha and Mark Wilcox.
Ghoreishi is the daughter of Renee and Easa Ghoreishi of Valparaiso. She is a member of Japanese Club and Olympiad, Art Club and Fish Club. She is also active in ‘Music to My Ears’, an art-based charity to women’s shelter. In addition she volunteers for Art Cart at the nursing home with art therapy projects and at the Chesterton Emergency Room Health Center. She plans to study biology, medicine and art.
Kosakowski is the son of Alan Kosakowski and Diane Kincaid of Chesterton. He is a member of the Trojan Guard Marching Band and Concert Bands. He also enjoys working on computers as a hobby. Kosakowski plans to study Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering at Purdue or Rose-Hulman University.
Metz is the daughter of Parry and Laurie Metz of Chesterton. She is a member of the soccer team and Three Lions United and CHS Student Government. She plans to study Communications or International Relations.
Socha is the daughter of Jim and Julianne Socha of Chesterton. She is active in swimming, track and field and the Porter County Special Olympics. She plans to study Physics and Classics.
Wilcox is the son of Amy and Denny Wilcox of Chesterton is active in Speech & Debate, Student Government and Cross Country.
WDSO-FM 88.3 Back On-Air After Transmitter Problems
As of today, Chesterton High School’s WDSO-FM 88.3 is back on-air after experiencing a problem with their transmitter on Sept. 1. A new and updated transmitter has been installed which should greatly improve sound quality. This transmitter replaces the original equipment that was installed in 2000 when the school was built.
On Monday, September 19, regular live broadcasting will begin at 6 a.m. The station is on-air 24/7 with live DJ’s broadcasting from 6 a.m.–4 p.m. weekdays with extended hours to cover the school’s live sporting events. An automated system also provides broadcasts outside of the normal hours.
