CHS Symphonic Band receives near perfect scores at ISSMA District Competition
The Symphonic Band earned a Gold ‘Superior’, rating, as well as the highly coveted ‘With Distinction’ Award for their excellent point total.

“I was very happy with the kid’s performance this weekend,” said Michael Scheiber, director. “Their excellent work on stage as well as their focus in the sight-reading room made this one of the most successful years I can remember for our Symphonic Band.”

At these events, each group is expected to prepare and perform three music selections, with one of these works being chosen from a required list of appropriately challenging music as determined by ISSMA. After completing their stage performance of these three works, the CHS ensemble was moved to another room where they were given 10 minutes to verbally (no playing of instruments) prepare a piece they viewed for the very first time. Once their 10 minute preparation time ended, the band was required to play the piece straight through without stopping. After event, the director of the group receives a recorded and written commentary, along with a numeric score representing the group’s sight-reading proficiency. This sight-reading score is then added to scores received from the three adjudicators of the band’s stage performance to determine the group’s final performance rating.

The last 2016 performance for the members of the CHS Symphonic Band will be as part of the combined CHS Commencement Band. The group will join the members of the CHS Wind Ensemble in a performance celebrating the successes of the class of 2016 as they graduate from CHS on Thursday, June 2.

Students participate in Valpo Univ. Theaterfest
The Chesterton High School German 4 and 5 classes competed on April 14 in the 13th annual Valparaiso University Theaterfest. The Theaterfest is designed to bring together Northwest Indiana high school German students for a day of friendship, fun, and competition. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to take their language learning out into the community and share it with others, while also realizing that what they are learning within the walls of CHS could grow into a college degree, university exchange opportunity, or future employment.

The CHS German 5 class won the competition this year for the fifth consecutive year with their performance of the German children's book, "About the Mole, Who Wanted to Know, Who Did Something on His Head"! While two theater pieces were presented wonderfully by the German 4 students, only one of them was awarded a trophy of second place for the piece entitled, "Five Little Ladybugs".

Chesterton High School German teacher Herr Cary Knauff was extremely proud of all of the students who performed and shined like stars on the stage at Valpo University.
